Generally, the materials used are rattan, wicker, rushes, reeds, “Smaar”, “G’dim” and dried palm leaves.
BASKETRY AND MATERIALS USED
Baskets, shopping bags, baskets, furniture, hats, placemats, we can see in Morocco and everywhere, in the souks, in the alleys of the medinas, just as many products from basketry.
Moroccan artisans most often use plants to carry out their tasks such as: the small or large rush which varies depending on the region, in Essaouira we find a small rush called Smaar, it is also in the region of Marrakech, and a large rush which still comes from around Essaouira. These rushes are used to make tagine-shaped baskets, containers, trivets, it is also called G’dim. In Marrakech we find the so-called “Marrakchia” basket made from palm leaves. The baskets that we see on the backs of donkeys “couffa” in Berber or “Akrab” also come from these previously dried palm leaves. Natural pigments are also used for basketry items, such as murex and saffron. All plant materials are harvested in the spring and left to dry on the flat roofs during the summer. The braiding work takes place during the winter.
All plant materials used require agile and sometimes very resistant hands; certain work for this is reserved for men.
Once the materials are completely dry, stems, leaflets and cords should be taken from them, which will then be woven and braided using different techniques.
It should also be noted that very often we hear that it is the leaves of the Doum palm that are used, but in reality it is the leaves of the false Doum palm, since this species of palm only lives in tropical Africa.
For this braiding, the techniques used and for the basketry products often remain the same used since the dawn of time, thus, among these techniques and processes we find: woven, sewn spiral, corded.
Wicker, reed, rattan and dried palm leaves are frequently used for basketry in the manufacture of handicraft products.
